ABOUT US

Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream was created by a Bethesda mother-daughter team. The beginning of their story traces back to the early 90s in South Korea when Sarah began making ice cream for her young daughter, Annie. The duo immigrated to Bethesda, Maryland in 2000, and it was not until Sarah’s retirement in 2018 that she suddenly found herself with enough time to indulge in her old hobby. She experimented and created original recipes using the highest quality and all-natural ingredients. Soon enough, she was receiving calls and orders from strangers for her handmade ice cream! 

Sarah called upon Annie to help turn her hobby into a business; Annie had graduated from Harvard University with a strong interest in entrepreneurship and had been dedicated to building her career as an educator and researcher. What began as a temporary endeavor turned into a full-time commitment as Annie recognized the immense potential for growth. Under Annie's leadership, Sarah's Handmade Ice Cream rapidly expanded.

Each of 3 scoop shops in Maryland features 40 site-made flavors that Sarah is “proud serving to her own family.” From nostalgic classics, seasonally inspired flavors, vegan options, to doggie ice cream, Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream offers something for everyone in the family. However, what sets Sarah's Handmade apart is its strong emphasis on mentorship/growth for all employees and a steadfast commitment to community giving. The brand has not only become popular, but has also earned accolades for its dedication to making a positive impact on the community.

Ambassadors: Ambassadors are at the forefront of customer engagement and front operation. We strongly believe in hard work, integrity, efficiency, and of course, fun! Our hiring pool is always competitive throughout the year, at about 12% final hiring rate. Please see below for more eligibility and criteria for the ambassador position. Average hourly pay for our ambassadors is ~$16.50/hour throughout the year.

Shift Supervisors: Our Shift Supervisors are proven leaders on the floor, and are capable of multitasking efficiently to run all shifts smoothly. You can be promoted as a shift supervisor after demonstrating success as an Ambassador. We do not hire shift supervisors; we develop our leadership team from current pool of ambassadors.

Operations & Production Team: We’re always looking for dedicated operations team members! We offer health, vision, and dental insurance for our full time staff, in addition to Paid Time Off, plenty room for growth, and flexible scheduling.

Ambassador Position Eligibility & Criteria

Our preferred minimum age for the Ambassador position is 16, or juniors in high school. However, on very rare occasions, we hire mature sophomores in high school. We also ask for a minimum commitment of 3 full months. We thoroughly check all references and teacher/professor recommendations. Please take a careful look at the criteria we use to score each application.

To be transparent, here are the criteria we use to evaluate each application:
- Knowledge & enthusiasm about Sarah’s Handmade Ice Cream (Google Maps or Yelp reviews, Instagram posts/stories with @SarahsHandmadeIceCream tags)
- Detail-oriented & “colorful” application that demonstrates authentic personality (Free of grammar errors, Great writer who clearly communicates ideas)
- Highest level integrity and maturity
- Excellent academic standing & achievements
- Highest references and recommendations from teachers and community members
- Open availability (weekends and holidays) this summer and beyond!

Summer Only Positions

We typically do not hire for summer-only positions. One main reason is that our summer team members are hired and trained by the end of April. We also have many returning ambassadors in the summer, so there is no need to hire for summer-only positions. Therefore, we prioritize candidates who are able to start training in the summer, and can continue to work in the fall.
